Identifying Suspicious Mail

Look for the following indicators of a suspicious letter or package:

  • No return address.
  • Restrictive markings.
  • Envelopes sealed with tape.
  • Badly typed or written and or misspelled words.
  • Possibly mailed from a foreign country.
  • Excessive postage.
  • Incorrect title of position or addressed to title of position only.
  • Oily stains, discolorations or crystallization on the package.
  • Strange odor.
  • Rigid, bulky or the use of excessive tape.
  • Lopsided or uneven.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

If You Receive a Suspicious Letter or Package
  • STOP! DO NOT HANDLE THE PACKAGE.
  • Isolate it immediately.
  • Don’t open, smell or taste.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Call the Operations Call Center at 501-526-0000
If a Letter/Parcel Is Opened and/or a Threat Has Been Identified
For Radiological Hazards
  • STOP! DO NOT HANDLE. Limit your exposure.
  • Evacuate the area.
  • Shield yourself from the object.

For Biological or Chemical Hazards
  • ISOLATE! DO NOT HANDLE.
  • Evacuate the immediate area.
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water.
