Doctor of Philosophy in
Pharmacology
Pharmaceutical Sciences Track
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Pharmaceutical Sciences
Track was established as a collaborative effort between the Departments of
Pharmacology and Toxicology
and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The track functions as a part of the graduate
program of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology.
In addition to the general rules
and regulations specified by the
University of Arkansas Graduate School (for details see the current issues
of the Graduate School Catalog and the
Graduate School Student Handbook), the
Pharmacology Program
has adopted specific requirements
for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmacology.
The Pharmaceutical Sciences
Track provides an interdisciplinary educational opportunity for students to
concentrate their studies in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. After acceptance into
the Pharmacology Graduate Program, students may petition for admission into the
Pharmaceutical Sciences Track. Students admitted to the Pharmaceutical Sciences
Track are firstly members of the Pharmacology Graduate Program and subject to
all regulations and requirements as stated in the Pharmacology Program Document
entitled
Admission Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program.
To fulfill the requirements for
a Ph.D., a student must satisfactorily complete the required course work (see
Curriculum for
the Ph.D. Graduate Program in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences Track),
pass the Candidacy Examination, complete a written dissertation based on his/her
laboratory work, and pass the Final Examination (dissertation defense).
COURSE CURRICULUM
The Curriculum for
the Ph.D. Graduate Program in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences Track
shows the general outline of a four-year curriculum in the Pharmacology Graduate
Program. All students shall register for the required courses, seminar and other
credits as described in the Curriculum. The advisor and the student will
determine the electives taken by each graduate student. A minimum of six hours
of elective didactic course work is required.
PROGRAM DURATION
Usually four years of graduate
study are required for the Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology. A student must
accumulate a minimum of 72 graduate credit hours, of which at least 25 credit
hours must be formal course work (didactic - for more information see Curriculum
for the Ph.D. Graduate Program in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences Track).
Eighteen (18) credit hours must be Doctoral Dissertation (PCOL 700V). The
numbers of research credit hours are not specified. According to the general
rules of the University of Arkansas Graduate School, a student must complete the
degree within seven consecutive calendar years from the date of the Declaration.
