The COP Support Staff adopted three children from the Angel Tree. Each child received a new outfit (sweat shirt, shirt, and pants), an item they listed as needed, and a toy. Thank you to Ellie Dickinson for coordinating the campaign!

Culinary Prescriptions Cookbook
The UAMS Culinary Prescriptions Cookbook is filled with recipes from UAMS employees, friends and supporters. With 8 sections and more than 200 recipes, proceeds from the sale of the cookbook go to the Campaign for UAMS. College Hosts First Family Open House Ginny Bell, Stephanie Gardner and Jack Bell
 
 
The College held its first Family Open House on Saturday, November 22, co-sponsored by Kappa Epsilon and the Parents Club. After an opening reception, including a student organizational fair, a program was presented by Stephanie Gardner, Parents Club Chairs Ginny and Jack Bell of Conway, and P3 Sarah Griffin, president of Kappa Epsilon.
 
Faculty members presented sessions to provide information about the academic program of each class. The closing session was held in the new Wilson Education Building, where Dean Gardner and Schwanda Flowers gave an overview of the fourth year experience. Finally, Kappa Epsilon treated family members to a program of photos depicting life as a pharmacy student at UAMS. The news release from UAMS can be read here

Faculty Briefs 

 
Lois Coulter has accepted the jointly funded faculty position at the Northwest AHEC in Springdale. She will join our faculty on January 5, 2009. Lois is a 1990 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy. She previously served as a clinical pharmacy specialist at Washington Regional Medical Center and also was on our faculty for nearly 14 years with the AHEC-Nortwest Family Practice Residency Program. She is an Associate Professor and board certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.
 
Four faculty members received awards at the AAHP meeting in Tunica, Miss., October 8-9. Kat Neill and Jill Johnson won a Best Poster award for their poster titled "The Impact of Implementation of Prior Authorization Criteria for Omalizumab (XolairŽ) in a State Employees Prescription Drug Plan." Marsha Crader was named 2008 New Practitioner of the Year recognizing her leadership, professionalism, and dedication to the future of health-system pharmacy, covering the last 12 to 18 months. Jason Derden was chosen as President Elect of AAHP. He will serve in this capacity until next fall when he assumes the role of AAHP President.

Bill Gurley was a featured speaker at the 27th Annual Dinner Meeting of the History of Medicine Associates in October, where he delivered a presentation on "Civil War Treasures in the History of Medicine Collection." The presentation focused on several unique and rare holdings in the Collection related to medical care in the Civil War, with an emphasis on Arkansas.

  
Two faculty members recently competed in marathons.
 
John and Jill Johnson cross the finish line at the NYC Marathon in NovemberJill Johnson competed in the New York Marathon in November, running with her husband John.They finished together at 4:42:08, 7 minutes faster than her last marathon.
 
 
 
 
Also in November, Keith McCain completed the San Antonio Marathon in 3:45:31, a new personal record. 
 
Marsha Crader's poster, "Effect on Sepsis Mortality Rate at a Regional Acute Care Institution After Implementation of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Sepsis Bundles," has been selected to be featured on ASHP's Quality Improvement Initiative Resource Center. Ten posters scheduled to be presented at the ASHP Midyear, including Marsha's, will be featured in a new "virtual" poster session at the convention. A video interview with Marsha and the poster materials will be posted on the ASHP website for 12 months starting in February, 2009. The resource center is designed to provide quality improvement resources to support pharmacist's roles in health care quality initiatives that improve patient outcomes and reward performance excellence. Dr. Justin Wilson, of Valu-Med Pharmacy in Midwest City, Okla., presented the third annual Heartland Lecture, sponsored by the Heartland Pharmacy Alliance Entrepreneurship Lecture Series. Dr. Wilson spoke about growing his pharmacy and developing new services for his patients, including travel medicine, a diabetes education program, and medication therapy management services.
"Green" Tree raises funds for CARTI   
    
Students with the tree donated to CARTI from APhA-ASPP3 Collin Ward, Vice President of Public Relations for APhA-ASP, reports that a tree donated and decorated by the organization, with the theme "There's Something About the Green Ones," garnered the top price of $2,500 and was the first tree purchased during the recent Festival of Trees fund raiser for CARTI. This is a 32-year-old fund raising event, with creatively decorated trees as the focal point.
 
College welcomes Congressman Mike Ross
 
P3 Cristina Easterling and Congressman Mike RossU.S. Rep. Mike Ross spoke to more than 200 students and faculty members on October 28 in the Wilson Education Building. His talk was sponsored by APhA-ASP. "When you leave this institution, leave here by being more than just a pharmacist," Ross said. "Leave here ready to get involved in your communities and in the political process and help make this a better nation in which to live." Following a brief speech reflecting on his political career and legislation he's introduced and sponsored to improve both state and national health care systems, Ross spent the remainder of the lunch hour taking several questions from pharmacy students.

Easterling article published in Student Pharmacist Magazine
 
An article written by P3 Cristina Easterling, President of APhA-ASP, has been published in the November/December 2008 issue of Student Pharmacist, the student publication produced by the APhA. The article discusses the chapter's efforts to educate the public on diabetes, and how their work resulted in the chapter being recognized at the 2007 Operation Diabetes winner at the APhA 2008 convention. Students Paint the Town Red for American Pharmacists Month
 
APhA-ASP students coordinated activities during October to celebrate American Pharmacists Month, including a Paint the Town Red campaign in Central Arkansas, health screenings, and an APA District Meeting Campaign. The climax of the month was an airplane banner flying high over the Razorback - Ole Miss game in Fayetteville held at the Reynolds Razorback Stadium on October 23. In addition, five segments of Here's to Your Health were broadcast by T. Glenn Pait, M.D. to inform the public about American Pharmacist Month. Recordings of the segments can be heard here.

Development News

The College's Development efforts are progressing. We have reached nearly 70 percent of our Imagine Campaign goal of $3 million. (See details below.) We sent nearly 2,500 letters to alumni from the Dean asking for tax deductible gifts to the Dean's Society or any other fund. Plans are being made to hold the annual Phonathon in February for two evenings and one day.
