REVISION:

SECTION: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
AREA: SERVICES
SUBJECT: USE OF UAMS ENTERPRISE COMPUTER RESOURCES

PURPOSE

The purpose of this procedure is to notify departments within the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) of the network services available to faculty, staff, and students on the UAMS campus and the procedures to be followed when requesting assistance.

PROCEDURE

Local Area Networks (LANs) Access is available to systems on LANs in many of the departments and colleges on the UAMS campus. For faculty and staff to gain access to LANs, contact the LAN Administrator or the Computer Help Desk for the network to obtain information on connection of workstations to the LAN.

UAMS Campus Network

  1. Most major systems and LANs at UAMS are connected to the UAMS Campus Network. To obtain access to computer systems or specific applications running on the UAMS Campus Network, faculty and staff should contact the Department, Service Provider, System Administrator or Computer Help Desk for the specific system for which access is desired.
  2. UAMS Affiliates Network

  3. The UAMS Affiliates Network is a network which interconnects the UAMS Campus Network with the networks at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the Little Rock Veteran’s Administration Hospital, and the North Little Rock Veteran’s Administration Hospital.
  4. This interconnecting network (UAMS affiliates Network) is fully supported by the UAMS Clinical Information Systems Department to include services for installation, problem/trouble-shooting, repairs and/or coordination of repairs.
  5. System users at each UAMS Affiliates Network site must be connected to the network at their site in order to have access to the UAMS Affiliates Network. Users should contact the Information Technology Department at their site to gain access to the network.
  6. To gain access to the UAMS Affiliates Network, UAMS network users should call the Computer Help Desk.
  7. Internet

  8. From the UAMS Campus Network, campus users have access to the state and international networks, ARKNET and Internet respectively, which link institutions of higher learning with other educational and research organizations and commercial data centers.

For more information on the UAMS Networks, please contact the Computer Help Desk at extension 68555.

As employees are added to the network they are granted certain resources by their specific IT network administrators. These resources by default include, but are not limited to, a secure E-mail account with 10+ meg of storage and a secure Home directory with 20+ meg of storage.

While IT maintains and has access to these resources for administrative purposes, these resources are granted to the individual by UAMS. The employee to which these resources were given is the only one to whom permission is granted. Any shared data must be placed in the departmental directories.

Even though IT maintains these areas are secure, the employee has a responsibility to keep personal items separate from these resources granted for business use. Ultimately, these resources are the property of UAMS and as such, final disposition of these resources may be conducted by UAMS through IT.
