DATE: 06/02/00
REVISION:

SECTION: ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
AREA: LIBRARY
SUBJECT: LIBRARY SERVICES

PURPOSE

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Library is the largest academic health information resource in Arkansas. Its purpose is to provide information for faculty, staff and students in all four colleges, the Graduate School, UAMS Medical Center, and the campus as a whole. The Library serves as a backup to the AHEC libraries, and as the AHEC Library for central Arkansas. The UAMS Library is also available to address the information needs of other users, ranging from employees of the Arkansas State Crime Lab to lawyers, social workers, teachers, and the clergy.

POLICY

It is the policy of the UAMS Library that access to the Library as well as assistance within the Library will be provided to all UAMS employees (faculty, staff, administration, clerical, skilled trades, etc.) as well as students and those affiliated in other ways with UAMS. People not affiliated with UAMS are allowed to use the Library’s resources on a limited basis. Entrances to the Library are on the first floor, south end (open at all times the Library is open), and the fifth floor (Monday-Friday, 8-5 only) of the Education II Building. To register for Library privileges, a person must come to the Circulation Desk, first floor of the Library, with her/his UAMS ID badge. The Library's website at http://www.library.uams.edu provides access to the Library's online catalog, electronic books, the OVID system of online databases and full text journals, and other electronic information resources. Users may access the Library's website in the Library, from computers on campus, or from home. The Library provides instruction on how to use the printed materials, databases, audiovisual items and computer based instruction materials housed in the Library, as well as personal information management. It will also do computerized literature searches (for a fee), and document delivery (for a fee). The services of the Historical Research Center, the Learning Resource Center, and the Jeff Banks Learning Resource Center are also available from the Library. As technology improves and becomes available, the Library integrates it into its services to the campus.
